Addition is the mathematical formula for putting multiple numbers together as a group. The easiest way to do this is by counting them together. Let’s use some simple examples and understand exactly how adding works.

We can use a number line as another way to count numbers as one group. In this example I started at 0 and counted to 3 and then added 2 by counting 2 more lines on the number line.
When using a number line to add you can start at the first number, in this case 3 and then just count the amount needed.
A number line is just a series of lines to help us count.

Adding more than two numbers at a time is still just counting them together as one group. We can use the number line again to see exactly how this works.
In this example I started at the first number, 3, then counted 2 lines for the second number, and then counted 1 more line for the third number.

Lets go over the technical terms for each part in an addition problem.
